  • SAMHSA-certified laboratory partners
  • DOT 5-panel urine test (federally mandated substances)
  • Medical Review Officer (MRO) review on all non-negative results

Required Testing Types

DOT Testing Scenarios We Support

Federal regulations require DOT-regulated employers to conduct testing in specific circumstances. We support all required testing types.

Pre-Employment

A negative DOT drug test result is required before a safety-sensitive employee may perform regulated duties for the first time.

Random Testing

Unannounced random selection from a DOT-regulated testing pool. Minimum annual rates vary by agency.

Post-Accident

Required testing after qualifying workplace accidents — alcohol within 2 hours, drugs within 32 hours for FMCSA-regulated employers.

Reasonable Suspicion

Required when a trained supervisor has reasonable cause to believe an employee may be using prohibited substances.

Return-to-Duty

A negative return-to-duty DOT test is required before an employee resumes safety-sensitive duties after a violation.

Follow-Up Testing

Ongoing unannounced follow-up tests as prescribed by a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) following a return-to-duty evaluation.

The MRO Review Process

The Medical Review Officer (MRO) is a licensed physician who reviews all non-negative laboratory results before a final report is sent to the employer. The MRO process is a required component of every DOT drug testing program.

When a laboratory reports a non-negative result, the MRO contacts the tested individual to determine whether a legitimate medical explanation exists — such as a valid prescription. After reviewing all relevant information, the MRO issues a final result of negative or positive to the employer. This process protects employees with legitimate medical needs while maintaining the integrity of the testing program.

FAQ

Common Questions About DOT Drug Testing

What is required for DOT drug testing?

DOT drug testing requires urine specimens to be collected using a Federal Custody and Control Form, analyzed at a SAMHSA-certified laboratory, and reviewed by a Medical Review Officer (MRO) before results are reported to the employer.

How quickly can post-accident drug testing be performed?

For FMCSA-regulated employers, alcohol testing must be completed within 2 hours of an accident and drug testing within 32 hours. We are available 24/7 to respond quickly throughout Middle Georgia.

Is mobile drug testing DOT compliant?

Yes. Our collectors are trained to perform DOT-compliant specimen collections using proper Federal Custody and Control Form procedures. Specimens are sent to SAMHSA-certified laboratory partners for analysis and MRO review.

What drugs are tested on a DOT drug test?

The DOT 5-panel test screens for marijuana (THC), cocaine, opiates (including heroin), amphetamines (including methamphetamine and MDMA), and phencyclidine (PCP).
