Unannounced follow-up drug and alcohol testing as prescribed by a Substance Abuse Professional. Mobile on-site collection for DOT-compliant and non-DOT programs throughout Middle Georgia.
Follow-up testing is an ongoing program of unannounced drug and alcohol tests required after an employee completes the return-to-duty process following a substance use violation. The follow-up testing plan is determined by a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) and is a mandatory component of the DOT return-to-duty process.
After an employee passes a return-to-duty test and resumes safety-sensitive duties, they are placed into a follow-up testing program. Follow-up tests are unannounced — the employee does not receive advance notice of when they will be tested. The SAP prescribes a minimum number of tests and a timeframe, which the employer is responsible for carrying out.
At least 6 follow-up tests must be conducted in the first 12 months following the employee's return to safety-sensitive duties.
The SAP may extend follow-up testing for up to 60 months after the employee returns to duty, depending on their individual clinical assessment.
All DOT follow-up drug tests must be collected under direct observation — the same requirement as return-to-duty tests.
Follow-up tests must be unannounced. The employee is not informed of when testing will occur, which is essential to the integrity of the program.
All DOT follow-up drug tests must be conducted under direct observation and analyzed at a SAMHSA-certified laboratory with MRO review. On Site Employer Solutions handles mobile collection at your location throughout Middle Georgia.
The SAP may prescribe follow-up alcohol testing in addition to drug testing. Follow-up breath alcohol tests are conducted using DOT-approved evidential breath testing devices with instant BAC results.
The employer is responsible for ensuring the follow-up testing plan prescribed by the SAP is implemented and completed. This includes scheduling unannounced tests at the required frequency and maintaining proper documentation.
Follow-up testing comes after the employee has completed their SAP evaluation, education or treatment, follow-up SAP evaluation, and return-to-duty test. It is the ongoing accountability component of the process — ensuring the employee remains substance-free after returning to safety-sensitive work.

Yes. All DOT follow-up drug tests must be collected under direct observation. Our collectors are trained to perform direct observation collections in full compliance with federal procedures.
No. Follow-up tests are conducted in addition to — not instead of — the employee's inclusion in the regular random testing pool. An employee in a follow-up program may still be selected for random testing at the same time.
A positive result on a follow-up test is treated as a new DOT violation. The employee must be immediately removed from safety-sensitive duties and the full return-to-duty process must begin again, including a new SAP evaluation.
